Privacy Policy

The short version

Golf Studio is built so that your data stays on your phone. There are no accounts and nothing to sign in to. Your videos, scores, overlays and exported clips are stored on your device and are never sent to us. If you agree, the app sends us anonymous information about how it is used — which screens and tools, and whether things work — so we can make it better. It never sends your videos, photos, scores, names or location, and there is no advertising or cross-app tracking. The app is free and has no in-app purchases.

Who we are

Golf Studio is published by PremiumPress Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 15814776), whose registered office is at Rowan House, 7 West Bank, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO12 4DX, United Kingdom. We are the controller of any personal data described in this policy. Questions about this policy can be sent to golfstarapp@protonmail.com.

What the app stores on your device

• Videos you record in the app or import from your photo library, plus trimmed copies made for editing.
• Projects: trims, speed changes, music choices, overlay choices and the order of your clips.
• Rounds and scorecards: courses, scores, dates, photos from the round, and the players you add, with their names, handicaps and photos if you choose to add them.
• Your profile: the name, home club, handicap and photo you choose to enter, all optional.
• Exports: the finished clips, which are also saved to your camera roll when you ask for that.
• Settings the app needs to work, such as your preferred units and output format, and recently viewed courses.

All of this lives in the app’s private storage on your phone. Swing footage is excluded from device cloud backups by default. Deleting the app deletes this data. We have no copy.

Done on your phone

Finding the swing in a video (from the sound of the strike or the movement of the golfer), reading the numbers from a photograph of a scorecard, and cutting and rendering your videos all happen on your device. None of your videos, photos or scores are uploaded to do it.

Permissions the app asks for

• Camera and microphone, to record a swing with sound and to photograph a scorecard.
• Photos, to import a clip or a photo and to save your export to the camera roll.
• Location, only while you are using the app, to show golf courses near you. Your location is used on your phone to sort the course list and is not sent to us.

Each permission is optional; the rest of the app works without it. You can change any of these in your phone’s settings at any time.

Services the app connects to

Golf Studio has no server of its own. A few features need information from outside the phone, and when you use them your device connects directly to the services below. They receive your device’s IP address and the request itself, as any website would, and handle it under their own privacy policies. None of them receive your videos, scores or profile.

• Apple Maps, to draw the map in the course finder on iPhone. Apple receives the area of the map being shown. apple.com/legal/privacy
• OpenStreetMap map images, on devices where Apple Maps is not available, for the same purpose. OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy
• Place search: when you type a town or place into the course finder, your phone’s own location service (Apple on iPhone) turns it into a position. If it can’t, the text you typed is sent to Nominatim, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation.
• Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, to show a photograph of a course where a freely licensed one exists, with its photographer’s credit. The requests name the course’s Wikipedia article and the photograph’s file. Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy

The list of golf courses itself is built into the app, from OpenStreetMap data, so browsing it sends nothing anywhere.

Usage analytics, if you agree

The first time you open Golf Studio it asks whether you’re happy to share how you use it. Nothing is sent unless you say yes, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings → Share usage.

If you say yes, the app sends usage events to PostHog, which stores them for us in the European Union. These are:

• Screens you open, by name only, such as “editor” or “library”.
• Features you use and how they turn out: for example importing a video (its length), finding swings (how many were found and how long it took), generating a montage (how many clips and which built-in music track), choosing a filter or font, switching an intro or outro on, exporting (whether it worked and how long it took), saving a round (how many holes and players), and adding or removing a player.
• How big your library is: the number of videos, projects, rounds and players.
• App events: when the app is installed, updated, opened and closed.
• Crashes: the technical error when the app fails.
• Device details PostHog adds: phone model, operating system version, app version, language and time zone.
• A random identifier created on your phone, so events from the same phone can be counted together. It is not linked to your name, email, Apple account or advertising identifier.

These events never include your videos, photos, scores, course names, player names, anything you type, or your location. PostHog receives your device’s IP address when the app connects to it, as any internet service does. The lawful basis is your consent. We use events only to improve the app and don’t copy them anywhere else. PostHog keeps them under its own data retention rules, which are set by PostHog rather than by us: on our current plan they stop being available to us after one year. What we do not do

• We do not create accounts or ask for your name or email address in order to use the app.
• We do not upload your videos, scores, photos or exports to any server.
• We do not run analytics unless you agree to it, and we do not run advertising or track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
• We do not sell or share personal data with anyone.

If you contact us

If you email us, for example with feedback from the app’s Settings screen, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. We use it only to reply, and delete it when the conversation is finished unless we need to keep it to meet a legal obligation. The lawful basis for this is our legitimate interest in answering your message.

This website

golfstudio.app is a static site. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests font files from Google when the page loads; Google’s privacy policy applies to that request.

Children

Golf Studio is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. Because the app does not collect personal data to begin with, there is nothing for us to hold.

Your rights

Because your data never leaves your phone, you already control it: delete a project, a clip, a round or the app itself and it is gone. Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) you have the right to ask whether we hold personal data about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to how it is used, and to receive a copy. If you think we hold any, for example because you emailed us, write to golfstarapp@protonmail.com. Turning off Settings → Share usage stops anything further being sent straight away. Usage events already sent carry a random identifier rather than anything about you, so we usually cannot tell which are yours; they remain with PostHog under the retention rules above. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published here with a new date at the top. Material changes are also noted in the app’s release notes.
